In the 1990s, Manila was gripped by news of an aswang invasion, an umbrella term for monsters that prey on humans. The attacks seemed to peak in 1997, during the Asian Financial Crisis, and many took it as a grim recession indicator. Most reports of attacks came from the slums. Two of the biggest stories involved the resident lamia of Robinsons Mall and a manananggal that terrorized the city. Smaller reports told of ghoul attacks and other occult events. I believe paranormal activity was also on the rise in the United States at the time. It was, if you ask me, a thrilling and terrifying era.
