I focused on self-care this week. I didn’t have the bandwidth for anything semi-academic, and honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to force it. I ended up writing on my Substacks. Not that anyone’s reading, but I enjoy it. There’s something satisfying about getting a playlist, an idea, or a point across in a post.

I didn’t plan for my coffee outings to have a theme, but they did in the end. I went to three different West Asian coffee shops. What I like about them is: the portions are bigger than your average latte, the drinks are consistently good, they stay open late, and the seats actually have cushions. Just pure joy on my part.

Sana’a Cafe in Oakland, CA
Damask Rose in Berkeley, CA
Mohka House in Oakland, CA
  • Sana’a Cafe makes really good lattes. I like going back because it feels fancy without being expensive, and the lattes are both good and affordable. The chairs are comfortable, which is a big plus.
  • Damask Rose also has great lattes. I’d return for both the drinks and the ambiance. My butt does hurt after sitting there, though β€” still worth it.
  • Mohka House has really good lattes, too. I’d go back for the drinks, the atmosphere, and, thankfully, the comfy seating.

I set out to visit two new coffee shops this month, and I didn’t expect to meet my quota, but I did. I also managed to update some of my government documents with much ease. Now, all that’s left is finding it in me to get a good night’s sleep.
